Winol - 25th May

My last WINOL bulletin as Production Editor was this week; it also went as well as it possibly could have done. This week we all stuck to our deadlines and the jobs we had to do. We even managed to get in to the gallery early enough to watch through all of the packages on the VT machine to check for spelling errors, strap line mistakes, if the packages would play, the timings etc and it showed because when we came to do the actual bulletin the VT machine worked perfectly.

Sam Harper was our presenter this week and she was fabulous as always. We had a full hour of rehearsing but only about 30 minutes of rehearsing with the script on the autocue; which stopped working throughout the day but played nice with Hana when it came to rehearse and go live.

The only small problem we had during the bulletin that came about live was that the headlines were slightly out of sync. This week we also put the bulletin on ustream and so for the first time in our second part of the semester we were live at 4. With the editing, I edited the whole bulletin, synced the headlines and put the credits on for the last time. I then uploaded it to YouTube and we were finished by 6pm, having all ready had the bulletin up for 2 hours.

I am so proud of my team this week. It was the last week, we were all tired, we were all sad and yet we got the bulletin out perfectly, on time and live. Throughout this semester we have worked so hard and so well together I am extremely sad to leave this amazing production group but I look forward to our final year together, our final semester on WINOL and our final roles for WINOL as I know my very ahrd working team will excel at everything they do. Thanks for the best team on WINOL my lovely ladies.

Winol - 18th May

This week was a DISASTER! I probably say it most weeks but this week was the epitome of awful.

We started out with a plan, as always but we had to pre-record an OOV in the morning which is where it all went wrong. The OOV script and package was not saved correctly so this took time to find and upload. The drop box where we were going to be putting all the packages instead of running back and forth with a hard drive didn't work also. We managed to record the OOV fine and Justina edited it just before we were due to upload the headline clips. This was OK, again a couple were not done by the deadline but they did not miss it by too much time.

Every week the headline script and straps were not as good as they could have been. This meant that we were then trying to come up with better ones when we should have been recording them. Just gone 1 we finished the headlines but we could not export any storiees to our hard drive until Justina had finished editing them and putting them on. This put us back on deadlines for colelcting the packages. If the drop box was working we would have been able to stop the constant backflow of missing deadlines.

Once all the packages were uploaded we then had trouble putting them on to the VT machine, once they were on it then kept crashing and disco wheeling so we closed the whole computer and it then looked like it would work. After last week having Andys package fail in the actual bulletin because I had not checked it meant that I was extra careful this week and I checked that every package worked correctly. What we did not have time to do was to fully play every package for timings. This meant that we found out Kieran had left his package long during the actual bulletin.

The production team did plan 30 minutes after we uploaded the packages to watch through them, make sure they work and for timings but we just did not have the time to accomplish it this week. However I will try again next week.

We also had Andy in as an interviewee about his package this week as well as Natasha as presenter and Sam as Sports presenter. This meant we needed three microphones and three talk backs. We only had two talkbacks which meant Andy went without one. It would have been better if he had had one as his alloted time was limited but Natasha did really well in getting him to wrap up his answer. We had three microphones but two of them kept cutting out and dying. Katie kept replacing them with batteries but in the end Corin checked mic 3 which is now not to be used and Andy and Sam had to swap a microphone I got out from the loan counter at 2.40pm.

After all that I was downstairs trying to get the new microphone to work whilst Justina was counting down to going Live. No one pressed record so we had to stop and start again meaning that we went live at 3.05pm. We still have not done a recording on the Tricaster for the last two weeks as it was messing up our voice syncing but I would like to try this next week.

After it was all recorded we had to put in packages that the VT machine did not allow to work in the bulletin. We also edited the ends and took out a problem we ahd with Kierans pacakge as well as a bad handover.

We then could not export it. We took out the two packages we had problems with in Final Cut and on the VT machine and it exported within three minutes. We could not log on to YouTube after the editing problem and then when we finally could log in YouTube would not fully upload our bulletin. I stayed in Tab9 until eight pm and Justina and Karen stayed until ten pm resutling the multiple upload failures and the bulletin still not being on the site.

The next day Brian managed to get the bulletin uplaoded and on to WINOL by the afternoon. He took out Stuarts piece on Vince Cable and went back through the rushes. I think this is what stopped the VT machine from working and stopped the export from working on Final Cut. This is the first week that I know of where the bulletin has not been up on a Wednesday.

My aims for next week are to use ustream, use and train people on the Tricaster and to have the bulletin up by four pm.

HCJ Test Revision Notes

Here's a simple break down of the answers to the questions. You may need to elaborate more, these are only bullet points but they may be helpful reminders in the exam.

1. Outline the verification principles as part of the school of thought known as logical positivism. Hoe might this principle be applied in the day-to-day work of a journalist?

-The verification principle is a way of categorising truth claims as: true, false or meaningless.
-If a claim can not be proven to be true or false then it is regarded as meaningless and should not be spoken about, because it can not be proven in any way.
-This relates to journalists because we need to make sure that everything we print or broadcast is fast, accurate and fair. Our articles or packages would not be accurate if we cant verify them as true or false. If they are not verifiable than there is no reason to talk about it as it must be meaningless.
-Religious and Cartesian people do not believe in this as God can not be verified to be true or false, therefore he is meaningless and should not be spoken about.
- Logical positivism is believed in by the Vienna Circle who were a group of philosophers who greatly influenced 20th century philosophy.
-Logical positivism questioned the validity of other philiosophical schools of thought such as metaphysics.
- Modern philosophy combines empirical knowledge with the deduction of human knowledge.

2. What is phenomenology: can there be such a thing as a subjective reality or subjective truth? What sort of standards ought a journalist apply?

-Phemonmenology is a branch of philosophy that deals with the subjective experience and your own personal reason of how and why you react that way.
-Solipsism- The world is a projection of your own being.
-Truth can be subjective - it is what you want to believe.
- Impircists Locke and Berkley believe that there is no way you can believe the door is there without thinking about it.
- It is a crazy idea but proved by quantum mechanics.
- The mind builds the data on the 5 senses.
- HUSSERL - Intention > if you want to see a tree you will see a tree. You WILL the world in to existence.
-HEIDEGGER > Phenomenologist, after the war he was concerned with our intentions that make the world then dealing with the consequences of those choices.

3. Describe in broad terms Keynes ideas on monetary policy, with an indication of how Keynesian “revolution” came about. Does “Keynesianism” inevitably lead to social regression, mortal failure, and serfdom as Hayek asserts?

-Check out Charlotte Clarks blog for a catchy rap that really helped me out on this question.http://charlotteaclarke.blogspot.com
-KEYNES, BOOST AGGREGATE DEMAND TO GET OUT OF UNEMPLOYMENT.
- K wants to steer markets, the circular flow when people are earning and then spending back out in to the economy.
- K if the markets are low we need to increase government spending.
- K believes that wars boost the economy because virtually everyone is employed.
- K State intervention can counter depression.
-K wanted to print more money which then resulted in more employment and good circulation.
-K believed you could pay people money even if the gold was not in the bank. The people would spend their money on rent, food etc and so the money would find it's way back out in to the economy making more jobs for people and allowing people to actually sell their wares. If people invested it like HAYEK wanted the money would not be circulating.
-K is the economist that theorised price controld by the governments central bank. Lower the interest rates when the economy is doing well and raise the interest rates when the economy is falling and slipping in to a depression or recession. This will mean that people will not be saving when there is a recession they will be spending the money and circulating the money.
- K argued the wages should not be cut because if they were there would be less spending and less money circulating the economy.
- HAYEK wrote the road to serfdom and argued that if the government take control of economic decision making then there will be an abandonment of individualism, liberalism and freedom resulting in a socialist or fascist oppression with serfs working for the State.
- H wants the markets set free.
- H believes KEYNES theory conceals the mechanics of change and is a simple quick fix solution.
- H says that we are only left with debt after circulating the market and believes we should save our money and let it grow in the banks. The market coordinates time with interest.
- H - MALINVESTMENTS WRECK THE ECONOMY and the boom devalues capital.
- Employment is a means but not an end to a recession or depression.

4. “Facts in logical space are the world” Witgenstein in Tractatus .Do you agree?

- It is a declaritive statment which is meant to be self evident.
-A fect is something that can be independently verified as true, false or meaningless.
- In the critque of pure reason Kant explains that what we experience physically is not the real world but a replica made with our brains.
-The brain consists of thoguhts which is close to the world being made up of facts
- Kants 'brain' could be Wittgensteins 'logical space'.
- The world is of facts not things.
-The world divides in to facts.
-The totality of facts determines what is the case and what is not.
-The World perceived is not made up of substance but of facts.
-SO..... if the world is made up of facts and the logical space is the experience of which we put these facts then that is the world we perceive. The facts in the logical space can only be verified as true or false because meaningless facts should not be spoken or thoguht about so should not be in the logical space.

5.Looking back at HCJ as a whole choose a topic/philosopher. Explain why they are important for journalistic reasons.

-This is to be revised and written individually so you'll have to come up with your own topic/philosopher.

Hope that has been of some use to you, Good Luck!

Winol - 11th May

We planned every part of our day out this week, right down to the minute but again, a lot went wrong. The day started off with a very simple line up of link, VT, link, VT, link, OOV etc but at about 2.30 (30 minutes before we go live) we had so many changes I lost count.

This week Charlotte, myself and Aimee told everyone we would like your head line clips ready to upload at 12.10 and packages ready to upload at 1.00. Everyone managed to do this except Andy. For both deadlines he was alte making us alte in recording the headline clips. He then asked for a 20 minute extension on his package and even then he added to that; meaning we finally collected his package at 1.40. We finally got all the packages uploaded and started rehersals where Andys package would not play so I had to re-save that three times, then there was a legal problem so it had to be taken off and at about 2.57 I finally got the package back to put on to the system. Alas, I did not check this version and when we came to play it in the bulletin, it did not work. We had to apologise for this and it was missed out of the bulletin. I had to put it back in in editing.

We also came up witha breaking news story which then had to have pictures put in and a script written and rehearsed in about 20 minutes.

We also had a problem with two people putting straps in the middle of the page. After changing one we could not change the other so they both had to be put back on the VT system without the correct place for the straps.

The running order was changed last minute too due to the script writer putting two OOVS together and then the handover which we would not be able to do. Geoff gave us the idea to switch the running order and this worked with Becky Grey's help too.

This was all happening in the Studio where we had two men from BJTC, Angus, Chris, Brian and Geoff Hill from CNN. Justina also had a problem with another OOV that we did not have much time in practicing. So overall another bad week due to content being changed a lot. I understand that this probably happens in broadcast a lot but I think that we did not actually need the breaking news. It happened on the Isle of Wight which is not for our target audience, there was no body found and we said in the bulletin that we would keep the viewer updated on our website but we have no story on the website for them to look for more information.

This week I think I found out why the voice sync was wrong in our last couple of bulletins. When we record the french and polish bulletin, editing is fine and the sound and vision is synced but when I put the ustream on the VT computer it puts the sound out of sync. So this week we put the ustream on Brians computer and the sound and vision were synced perfectly. I found and corrected this problem by myself, which makes me very proud instead of running to a technician. So snaps for me.

When I started editing and after putting Andys package back in I noticed that because of the technical problem and because of changing the running order we had no link between Andys package and the Emily OOV. This made it look like one long package so for the first time that I have been Production Editor we had to go back in to the studio to record a link. Kieran Brannigan, the presenter also wanted to re-record the beginning because he had fluffed a couple of his lines due to all the complications in rehearsals. This added to editing time and again the bulletin was not uploaded until 6.30. Next week our primary goal is to have the bulletin on WINOL at 4pm sharp.

Lastly, the talk back was not working due to technical problems that could not be fixed so I would like this to work next week too. It meant that we were still running back and forth to Tab9 instead of jsut being on a headset.

This week we wanted to keep production simple so that everything would go to plan and work properly but decisions were made to complicate a lot at the last minute; confusing the director, sound, vision mixer, VT person and the presenter.

Next week I hope that all the Editors are a lot stricter with deadlines. I have also been shown by Paul Carter a way in which we can drop packages in to a folder that will appear on the studio computer. This means that we will not have use hard drives and keep running back and forth.

Winol - 4th May

This week we have had our first ever work experience person in. His name is Jack and he is looking for a career in directing. We showed him round the studio and the gallery but he actually knew a lot of what we were showing him because he had his own studio at home. Over the next two weeks he helped us a lot and was able to show us new ways of doing things that we had not thought of before. I hope we were able to pass over some of our knowledge to and that his work experience was enjoyable.

This week did not go as well as planned. We also did not have a guest editor in which was lucky because this week was not our best work. The script was late and was not written correctly so we did not know when VT's were being played or OOV's. This confused everyone in the gallery. There was a very complicated OOV featuring Eddie Izzard which none of the production team were told about until the last minute and we did not go live at three becuase Sam Homewood's microphone stopped working; this meant I had to run downstairs and correct the problem whilst we were meant to be starting the bulletin.

In the headlines we have now decided that we are going to have straps for them but without the 'WINOL NEWS' written on them. Just a blank strap with the headline on it. Due to the headline clips being changed at last minute and the straps for them too, one strap did not have the 'WINOL NEWS' part taken off of it and so there is a continuity error.

We did manage a Skype conversation to America about Bin Laden and the Royal Wedding which worked perfectly and overall I am very happy with this part of the bulletin. It means were opening up our bulletin for more views and it also helps with the production teams knowledge of how to Skype through the Studio on to the live output.

All of this said the team did really well and we managed to get the bulletin out, jsut about 3 minutes late. Our last problem then came that when we were editing the bulletin in Final Cut the sound did not synv with the vision. This took a couple of hours to rectify and then another hour uploading to Youtube. The ustream version also did not work so we were not able to put this up at 4, instead the whole bulletin went up about half 6. This again was then wrong as the voice synced back out and so Chris then went on and changed it again.

All in all a really bad week. We did have Hana join us this week and Jack so our team is growing too. We also did not have meetings Monday and it was our first time back in the Studio for five weeks. This was another learning week for us. We also need to figure why the voice was not synced in editing and need to be more organised for Geoff Hill from CNN next week.
